Steve joined us on a two year postdoctoral fellowship funded by the MacDiarmid Institute (2009). Steve carried out his PhD studies in the Optical Tweezers group in Glasgow, where he worked on a variety of problems involving hydrodynamic interactions, high speed cameras and microrheology. He did much of the hard work calibrating our Optical Tweezers set-up and worked on developing several super-cool applications including single molecule stretching and microrheological measurements. His other interests include tramping, skiing, playing the woodblocks & guitar for an Abba tribute band, juggling, beer brewing, and unicycle. In March 2011 he took up a place on a Teachers training course, and  accepted a position as a physics teacher in a college in Auckland. In January 2013, Steve has returned to Massey University and has since accepted a position as physics tutor. His recent focus is to build the Massey Physoc group.

Doctor Doctor!

Well done Dr Brad;-) Dude, you have come a long way! I’ve enjoyed every minute of it – too many stories to mention. I hope you had the time of your life…and that you manage to keep playing with gloopy goo-ey stuff and shining on….

Auf Wiedersehen !

Farewell to Katharina 😉 It’s been cool having Katharina Meyer around doing her Internship, now Hurricane is returning to Germany to complete her studies. Here we are saying farewell with Lily’s patented dumplings recipe ;-), and here is Katharina on the top of Mt Ngauruhoe modelling her farewell hat !

PhDs On Track

The group threw down the gauntlet this Thursday at Palmerston North’s International Daytona raceway….and initially it was picked up by Left to Right: Vincent (working with Catherine Whitby), Ben, Sahsi-“CaptainCrash”, Susav, Bill, Jim (the Ringer), and Josiah. For now the standings are below, but it should be noted these are not corrected or age or […]

Obey Your Master!

Congratulations to Ben, who has successful obtained a Masters in Chemistry, with a thesis examining the use of Rheo-NMR in aligning liquid crystal phases for the measurement of residual dipolar couplings in protein structure determination. Good effort dude! Ben is continuing his studies and (after he has washed his hands) will be taking up a […]

Doctor, Doctor !

Well done to Ian, who has successfully defended his PhD thesis “Factors influencing mixing and mass transport in the small intestine” . Well done Ian!..Luvly to see cool Soft Matter Physics in snotty mucus and smelly Possum’s guts 😉
