Mariela Rodriguez-Otazo

iconMMariela comes to us from Cuba where she undertook her undergraduate studies and a Masters in the Physics Department, at the University of Havana.

After moving to the Aimé Cotton Laboratory, Paris-Sud 11 University, Orsay, France to obtain her PhD in “Optical tweezers to manipulate nano and micro objects interesting for chemical or biological applications” she then undertook postdoctoral work in Italy at the NanoScience Institute S3 – National Research Council (CNR-Nano) and University of Modena e Reggio Emilia studying protein denaturation.

She is currently working on improving our set-up for facilitating single molecule experiments, such as DNA stretching.

She also belongs to a group of Independent Developers for Mobile Applications  and has been a member of Website Administrator team on: http://www.thedungeontavern.com/

AMN-Fest! – Did I Just Learn Something AND Have Fun?

February saw the group in Nelson to take part in AMN7; posters and talks were presented; including a cameo from Bill with Prof Kate McGrath and Nanogirl at Nelson Girls High School; and the odd craft ale was consumed.                 Among other things was great to catch up […]

Doctor Doctor !

Well Done to Chris Lepper who has come along way since this 2008 photograph to successfully defend his PhD thesis which deals with the effects of pressure on nucleotides and RNA oligomers. Along the way Chris has constructed several Cornflour Pits and a Trebuchet or two 😉 Well done Chris!

ASAXS !

Bill, Brad and Jess got to the Synchrotron in Aussie earlier in the year and with Duncan McGillivray (Left) from the University of Auckland, and Tim Ryan and Nigel Kirby from the SAXS beam line team, did some anomalous scattering measurements in an attempt to measure the ion-distribution around polyelectrolytes of varying charge density. Really […]

Auf Wiedersehen !

Farewell to Katharina 😉 It’s been cool having Katharina Meyer around doing her Internship, now Hurricane is returning to Germany to complete her studies. Here we are saying farewell with Lily’s patented dumplings recipe ;-), and here is Katharina on the top of Mt Ngauruhoe modelling her farewell hat !
