Ben Westberry

Ben has an American heritage, but has been in NZ for many years, undertaking his Undergrad and Honours in Physics at Massey. After summer and Honours projects in the group looking at constructing OT, playing with axicons and vaporising flies (and lenses oops..:-)) Ben signed up for a PhD in with us. He is a budding experimentalist, particularly in optical systems, and has good programming skills, that he is bringing to bear in MD and SAXS calculations. His project will primarily focus on the polysaccharide carrageenan, and how its structure and interactions relate to its intrinsic “helical” structure. When not science-ing Ben also enjoys home renovation, travelling, and large Cuban cigars – and really wants to fight a Lion…..

Gringo Hits Europe ;-)

A post about Pablo also has a German flavour;-) Pablo attended a cool soft matter conference in Germany, presenting a poster on his graph analysis of networks, http://www.fz-juelich.de/SharedDocs/Termine/ICS/ICS-2/EN/Eigene/2015/Jülich-Soft-Matter-Days-2015.html?nn=763854 Then he went onto Leipzig to visit David Smith’s group who have been doing some cool stuff making “polymers” of designed stiffness using DNA asssemblies;-) http://www.izi.fraunhofer.de/dna-nanosysteme.html?&L=1 I […]

Back at the Lake:-)

Earlier in the year group members enjoyed a few days back at Lake Rotoiti courtesy of Brad’s folks:-) Priceless. Here is Mariela learning to fish, and Bill……dreaming of a pectin-based society!

AFM Maps & Geocaching European Tour

Welcome home to Jess, who has been spending a few months in Cambridge getting to grips with using AFM for mapping mechanical properties, while finding geocaches and sampling local treats such as YumYums and strange and hungry insects….. 😉 Nice work Jess!

AMN-Fest! – Did I Just Learn Something AND Have Fun?

February saw the group in Nelson to take part in AMN7; posters and talks were presented; including a cameo from Bill with Prof Kate McGrath and Nanogirl at Nelson Girls High School; and the odd craft ale was consumed.                 Among other things was great to catch up […]

Doctor Doctor !

Well done Dr Marj;-)! Marjorie successfully defended her thesis last week on “Developing a Dual Trap Optical Tweezers Method to Measure Interactions Between a Pair of Oil Drops“. Was great to see her back in NZ again; and finally see her get her just rewards! Enjoyed working with you Marj – so long and thanks for […]
